As far as tip-ups goes your mainly looking at black, green or white dacron. Black is harder (for us) to see in the water and I know when I walk up to a tip-up and look down the hole, it’s alot easier to see which direction the line is going etc.

The only way to go. Take a look at the new Berkley tip up line. It is teflon coated and stays limp in cold weather. I like to use braided line in the 50-80# class depending on the diameter.
